On Sunday, February 19, the Pacoima Historical Society is collaborating with the Museum of the San Fernando Valley to present a gala Black History Month celebration. Both organizations are inviting Valley residents to come experience the visual and oral history of African Americans in the San Fernando Valley. The celebration will feature music from local bands and artists, with DJ/MC Eric Stewart hosting the festivities. There will be large photo exhibits, docented museum tours, crafts for children, vendors, and food. Scheduled guests will include: USC Football Legend Anthony Davis who was an All-American from San Fernando High School and member of the 1965 North Valley Broncos, the first all-Black baseball team to advance to the Little League World Series; Congressman Tony Cardenas and his recognitions of certain outstanding Black Valley citizens; District 20's new State Senator Caroline Menjivar; and special invited guest Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass. Author and historian Crystal Jackson will also deliver an in-depth presentation on the untold African American history of the San Fernando Valley. She will also be signing copies of her new book “The Marilyn Monroe Connection,” which reveals the Hollywood actress’ secret connection to Pacoima’s Black community. Admission is free though donations are appreciated and sponsorship packages are available for inclusion in our special edition souvenir book.
