In the aftermath of World War II, the Los Angeles Baptist City Mission Society saw a need to establish churches in the San Fernando Valley , where the expanding population growth was an open door to fulfilling the Great Commission. They bought property in the Valley, and after years of planning, praying and envisioning, the launch service of First Baptist Church of Woodland Hills was held on May 7, 1950. The first congregants were a small group of believers who had moved into the San Fernando Valley. Many were returning World War II veterans and were anxious to have their own homes.
The property had been a walnut processing plant and some of the buildings were still there and served as the sanctuary and Sunday school rooms. The area grew rapidly and so did the church. It became evident that a permanent structure was needed and the sanctuary and parsonage were built. Several years later the fellowship and educational building was built. Even with the added facilities, as the Sunday school grew some of the classes were held outdoors. Pews in the sanctuary were added in the early sixties. As the needs of the church changed over the years, modifications were made to the facilities. The parsonage was converted into the pre-school building; the church office was moved from the educational building to its present location near the sanctuary. During the earthquake of 1994 major structural damage was done to both the educational and sanctuary buildings. Upgrading was done on both facilities.
The congregation of believers are still responding to the Great Commission, and firmly believe their greatest days of blessing and growth are yet ahead.
